Dwarka has always evoked keen interest among scholars and researchers because of its links with the Mahabharata, which mentions sea level changes much before the concept was developed and accepted in oceanography/marine geology. It was therefore naturally the first site to be taken up for marine archaeological exploration in India. The sea off Dwarka has been explored since 1982 for marine archeological purpose and the findings have attracted the attention of media and the common man. Archaeological findings such as a large number and variety of stone anchors suggest that Dwarka was a very busy port during the historical and the medieval periods. The present book details the scientific analysis of systematic explorations carried out between 1998 and 2002. The archaeological findings from Dwarka have been compared with the findings from various sites along the Saurashtra coast to provide relative information. The type of the antiquities recovered from the sea bed is indicative of the involvement of ancient man in maritime activities. This book discusses extensively the date and identification of anchors and other objects recovered from underwater exploration. The book also addresses some of the controversies that arose during early stage of the exploration based on additional facts and findings collected. Divided into two major sections devoted to Dwarka and Somnath respectively, the book is profusely illustrated with underwater and surface photographs, drawings and tables. It is hoped that the book will provide valuable facts on the underwater archaeology of Dwarka and Somnath for readers and scholars to draw their own conclusions.

About the authors | A.S. Gaur (1965) working in the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa since 1988, has carried out extensive research in the field of Marine Archaeology. He has authored Harappan Maritime Legacies of Gujarat (2000) and co-authored Archaeology of Bet Dwarka (2005). He has also co-edited two books namely Krishnayan: A Peep into the Past (2004) and Glimpses of Marine Archaeology in India (2006). A large number of research papers have been published by him in reputed scientific and archaeological journals. Sundaresh (1964), is working in National Institute of Oceangraphy, Goa since 1989 as a Marine Archaeologist. He has carried out extensive underwater archaeological investigations at Dwarka, Bet Dwarka, Somnath, Mahabalipuram, Poompuhar, Goa and Lakshadweep waters for the study of submerged ports and shipwrecks. He has participated in an international expedition for the study of submerged structures in Japan waters. He has more than 60 research papers to his credit. He has also co-authored a book Archaeology of Bet Dwarka (2005). Presently he is working on coastal archaeology and shipwrecks on South Indian coast. K.H. Vora (1952), a Marine Geologist, joined the National Institute of Oceanography in 1977. He began with offshore engineering surveys using acoustic sensors; he subsequently became part of team which collected and interpreted underway data from the western shelf of India, mainly to study marine geomorphology and palaeo-oceanography with a view to infer sealevel/shoreline changes. Since 1991 he is looking after activities in the field of Marine Archaeology at NIO, Goa. He has taken keen interest in planning and executing programme at Dwarka – Bet Dwarka, Poompuhar, Mahabalipuram and Goa waters amongst other things. He has also co-authored Archaeology of Bet Dwarka (2005) and co-edited Glimpses of Marine Archaeology in India (2006). |
