RAMAKRISHNA MISSION

The monastic Order bearing the name of Sri Ramakrishna is inspired by the ideal lived by Sri Ramakrishna, preached by Swami Vivekananda and demonstrated in practical life by Sarada Devi. The other Apostles of Sri Ramakrishna were both engaged in propagating and living the ideal in their lives. This forms the basis of the Ramakrishna Movement and Ramakrishna Order.

The Ramakrishna Order comprises the twin institutions named Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. Though the Ramakrishna Order, for all practical purposes, came into being under the guidance of Sri Ramakrishna himself, but the actualization of the Ramakrishna Math came in 1886 after his passing away. Through various phases, the Math finally found its permanent centre at Belur (near Kolkata in West Bengal in India ). The Ramakrishna Math is a monastic organization for men with more emphasis on traditional life of monasticism.

The Ramakrishna Mission was founded by Swami Vivekananda inspired by the ideals of his master Sri Ramakrishna on 1 May 1897 . The Mission is a registered society in which monks of Ramakrishna Math and lay devotees cooperate in conducting various types of social service as a part of their spiritual practice.

The Ramakrishna Math was registered in 1901 and the Mission in 1909. Today the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is located at Belur Math (near Kolkata in West Bengal in India ).
